On April 3, 2009, elbegdorj was nominated as the presidential candidate of the Mongolian Democratic Party with 99.3% of the votes. Under the coordination of the Democratic Party, the Civil Will Party and the Green Party, which also have seats in the Mongolian Parliament, gave up their nomination rights and joined the Democratic Party in the election, forming a democratic camp in which the three parties jointly supported elbegdorj. In the end, Owen won with 5 1.24% of the votes, 35,000 votes ahead of the candidate of People's Revolutionary Party and former President enkhbayar.
