Indonesia's Three Kingdoms culture was originally a national belief of Chinese immigrants, who brought the beliefs and stories of the Three Kingdoms to Indonesia. The characteristics of communication in this period are basically word of mouth in the Chinese community. After living abroad for many years, local Chinese people sit around and talk about the stories and characters of the Three Kingdoms in their spare time or when they are homesick, so as to relieve their homesickness and relive the quintessence of the country.

The text of Romance of the Three Kingdoms entered Indonesia in the middle of19th century. According to the description in China's Traditional Novels in Asia by the French scholar Sulmont, in the middle of19th century, there was a phenomenon of renting the manuscript of Romance of the Three Kingdoms for a living among Indonesian local Chinese. From this record, we can know that Indonesian Chinese at that time were so eager for domestic traditional culture that they took renting novels by hand as their livelihood. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in this period was only written by hand, so the spread of the culture of the Three Kingdoms at this stage was very limited. This is also the earliest record of Romance of the Three Kingdoms spreading in Indonesia.

According to the records in the History of Oriental Literature Exchange, in the mid-1950s, the local China scholars had translated The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and some wonderful stories of the Three Kingdoms were serialized by the then Indonesian Clarion. However, because Indonesia was still a colony of the Netherlands and had a large immigrant population, the translated text was translated from Malay. According to Malay literature of Indonesian Chinese, from the early 1980s to the end of19th century, there were three different versions of Romance of the Three Kingdoms in Indonesia.

From these records, we can know that The Romance of the Three Kingdoms has developed from the original manuscript to three different versions. After more than 40 years of dissemination and development, Romance of the Three Kingdoms has occupied a considerable cultural market in the local area. At this time, Indonesia not only has a translation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but also many foreign scholars re-create it in different languages and styles according to the translation. Many novels and research documents with the theme of the story of the Three Kingdoms are widely circulated in Indonesia and are favored by a large number of readers of different nationalities and classes.

The Indonesian version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms was translated in/kloc-0 at the beginning of the 9th century, during which two versions appeared. One was translated by local scholar Qian, which lasted for thirteen years and was divided into sixty-two editions. The other one was translated by scholar Li Yunying according to different versions, which took three years. Among them, Liu Yun's English version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms was serialized in Indonesian local newspapers. Among them, Qian's translation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms is the most popular, because this translation is closest to the original, and the book has been revised and reprinted many times in the later period.

In the last century, the spread and development of the cultures of the Three Kingdoms in Indonesia experienced a great turning point. According to relevant data, from the 1940s to the beginning of this century, although The Romance of the Three Kingdoms was still published in Indonesia, it actually experienced a stagnation stage of more than 70 years. The reason is that during this period, Indonesian society experienced three relatively large periods of fluctuation: the first time was the smoke of World War II, which spread all over the world. At that time, after Japan occupied Indonesia, various cultures were greatly influenced; The second is the period when Indonesia was founded from the Netherlands; Third, the Indonesian Chinese exclusion incident at the end of last century made China people feel sad.

At the beginning of this century, China culture once again set off an upsurge in Indonesia, and the translation and publication of Romance of the Three Kingdoms was also pushed to the forefront. Indonesian Chinese learn and feel the quintessence of their motherland by letting their children read novels. With the popularity of electronic products and the landing of movies, operas and games with the theme of the Three Kingdoms series, the culture of the Three Kingdoms has been sought after by more and more people in Indonesia. The wonderful stories and main figures of the three countries have also taken root in Indonesia and become a local foreign fusion culture.

So, who is the most influential and popular celebrity in Indonesia? This man is neither Zhuge Liang with unparalleled wisdom nor Cao Cao with the strongest strength, but Guan Yu, one of the five generals in Shu and Han Dynasties. The worship of Guan Yu began in the prosperous Tang Dynasty in China, which not only attracted a large number of fans in China, but also attracted a large number of audiences abroad. This admiration for Guan Yu is deeply rooted among Chinese in Indonesia. /kloc-When China people migrated in large numbers in the middle of the 8th century, the image of Guan Yu first landed in Indonesia, which was more than a century earlier than the spread of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Like Guan Yu worshippers all over the world, early Indonesian Chinese not only worshipped Guan Yu at home, but also prayed sincerely every day. In the Chinese-inhabited areas of major cities in Indonesia, there are also public temples or loyalty shrines, which worship on time on holidays and incense is flourishing. At first, the worship of Guan Yu was just a sacrificial activity in Chinese circles. With the spread of Romance of the Three Kingdoms in Indonesia, many Indonesian natives have gradually become admirers of Guan Yu. However, before this century, local Chinese were the main admirers of Guan Yu.

Since the beginning of this century, with the rise of the Three Kingdoms cultural craze in Indonesia and the spread of various modern channels, the image of Guan Yu has been deeply rooted in the hearts of local people, and Guan Yu worship has become an inherent local culture, and more and more Indonesians have joined the ranks of Guan Yu worship. For example, in Lingguang Temple in Bandung, Indonesia, a grand birthday ceremony for Guan Gong is held every year, which lasts for three days and has more than a dozen programs. At that time, not only local Chinese, but also people from different classes and fields in Indonesia gathered here to celebrate Guan Gong's birthday.
