In February 2002, Yang Yang participated in the19th Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City, USA. On February 16, in the women's 500-meter final of short track speed skating, she took the lead all the way, and finally won the championship with a score of 44 seconds 187, thus achieving the breakthrough of zero gold medal in the China Winter Olympics.

After that, she won the silver medal in the women's 3000-meter relay with her teammates and the gold medal in the women's 1 000-meter race with the score of1min 36.391.
