Xi An Zhong Drum Tower Museum Introduction Xi An Zhong Drum Tower is an Amin Dynasty building, which was built in 1384, that is, the seventeenth year of Ming Hongwu. In ancient times, it was named after hanging a big clock upstairs and ringing it every day. The bell tower echoes the Drum Tower in the west and becomes one of the core buildings of Xi after completion.
The bell tower is a wooden attic building with double eaves, spire and beam frame, with a total height of 36 meters. It looks like three floors, but there are actually only two floors, which is also called "double eaves and three drops of water" in ancient buildings. The middle eaves play a protective role, reducing the impact of rain on the lower eaves, and the multi-storey eaves are also a symbol of rank. At the top of the bell tower, there is a treasure top nearly 2 meters high, which is made of solid wood, covered with copper skin and covered with gold foil. Brilliant in the sun, it has become the crowning touch of the bell tower.
The original location of the bell tower is not in this place now, but in the west of the drum tower, which is probably the location of the street corner of Guangji in the north of West Street today. Due to the needs of urban development, Xi 'an City was expanded on a large scale in the Ming Dynasty, extending the city wall to the east and north 1/4, and the location of the bell tower appeared in the west, which was no longer moderate. During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty 10, that is, in AD 1582, Gong Mao, the governor of Shaanxi Province, ordered Xianning and Chang 'an counties to preside over the overall eastward movement of the bell tower, so that it could be moved to its present position. How to complete such a huge project depends on the design of the bell tower.
The bell tower base is made of blue bricks, each side is 35.5 meters long and 8.6 meters high. There are cross-shaped coupon holes on all sides of the platform, both 6 meters high and 6 meters wide, which are connected with four streets. The wooden building is located in the center of this pedestal and supported by 36 red wooden columns. The walls on all sides are not load-bearing, but only play the role of enclosure and partition. At the joint of column and beam, the arch-shaped load-bearing structure is called "arch", and the square block between arch and arch is called "bucket", both of which are collectively called bucket arch. Bucket arch consists of bucket, arch, arch and square. "Bucket" is a square block with a small top and a large bottom, which is placed at the intersection or end point of arch, arch, square and column, and plays a role in connecting the top and bottom in the whole bucket arch structure. The "arch" is a rectangular block, the bottom surfaces of both ends are cut into curves, and the whole is slightly arched, which has the function of stretching and picking out in the bucket arch. "Ang" is a member of the front and back direction, and the outer end is particularly long. These four components are criss-crossed, pulled from left to right, and stacked layer by layer, which transfers the weight of the beam frame and roof to the supporting columns layer by layer and plays a transitional role. These outward arches also make the eaves of the building more profound and spectacular. The connection between the wooden components of the whole building adopts tenon-mortise connection, and tenon-mortise refers to the convex and concave parts at the connection of the building components. This connection mode is not only convenient for installation and disassembly, but also durable and stable. It is precisely because of this special building structure that when the bell tower moves eastward, it is only necessary to mark and disassemble the components according to the drawings and reassemble them at the current site. Mr. Gong Maoxian, then governor of Shaanxi Province, wrote the poem "Song Monument of Bell Tower Moving eastward" for this huge relocation project, which was engraved on the wall of the northwest corner of the lobby on the first floor of the Bell Tower and became an important historical evidence for the eastward movement of the Bell Tower.
The most gorgeous part of the roof is the painted picture. At first, color painting was applied to the surface of wood structure to prevent wind and rain erosion and protect the building. Later, with the continuous development of productive forces, it gradually formed a decorative style with symbolic significance and aesthetic value. Because it is attached to the surface of the building, it is greatly influenced by environmental conditions, and its destruction speed is much faster than the building itself. Therefore, we didn't see the original appearance of Xi 'an Bell Tower color painting. Now the color painting on the bell tower in Xi 'an is redrawn by 1952- 1953. Although it is heavy paint, these color paintings also adopt the color paintings of Hexi and Zi Xuan, which are consistent with their architectural grades. They are rare senior official color paintings in Xi 'an and even in the northwest. In particular, some high-end "Golden Dragon Seal Painting" and "Swivel Painting" symbolizing imperial power, with patterns and lines mostly gilded with white powder. The production process is rigorous and the materials are excellent. In the study of traditional building technology and traditional materials, fully absorbing its essence and properly adopting modern technology not only inherits the history and culture, but also embodies the contemporary characteristics.
