Pen name and real name are different. Real name is a person's real name, including family symbols (surnames) and names given by parents. Pen name is a kind of pseudonym, which is mostly the signature of writers and scholars when they publish their works. Some of these signatures are related to the original name, while others are not. Pen names appeared in ancient China. Jin Ping Mei Hua Ci is a novel published in Wanli period of Ming Dynasty, signed by Xiao Sheng in Lan Ling.
