Yuan, one of the surnames in China, is a multi-ethnic and multi-origin surname, which originated from Gui surname and belonged to ancestors.

At the end of the Song Dynasty, Yuan moved to Danyang, Hubei, Lujiang, Wuxi, Yangzhou and Nanjing, Anhui. After the Song and Yuan Dynasties, Yuan's descendants migrated all over the country.
