Chen Lin? Zhong Mei was born in Qiantang (now Hangzhou, Zhejiang). The Southern Song Dynasty Painting Academy is waiting for the imperial edict. He is good at painting flowers, birds, landscapes and figures, and he has been instructed by Zhao Mengfu, so he is good at painting, especially at copying historical sites. There is only one flower-and-bird painting preserved in Chen Lin, namely The Flower-and-Bird Picture (Palace Museum), which was painted in Song Xuezhai, Zhao Mengfu in the fifth year of Dade (130 1). There are Zhao Mengfu's retouching and inscription in the painting, which is called Chen Lin's game pen and ink. It is very important to take care of it. The works are characterized by distinctive features, meticulous brushwork with a slight freehand brushwork, both thickness and smoothness, natural and smooth brushwork, varied brushwork, vivid image, simple style and the charm of literati freehand brushwork. This painting not only embodies the painting characteristics of Chen Lin, but also represents the evolution characteristics of flower-and-bird painting in Yuan Dynasty. Chen Lin also has landscape paintings handed down from generation to generation, such as Travel Notes of Autumn Mountain and Ancient Trees on Cangya, all of which are freehand brushwork in ink and wash.
