1976, Mr Guterres was elected as a member of the Portuguese parliament for a term of 17 years. During this period, he chaired the parliamentary committee on economy, finance and planning, followed by the parliamentary committee on territorial management, municipal administration and environment. He also served as the leader of his own party in parliament.
For many years, Mr Guterres has been actively participating in the Socialist International, a worldwide social democratic organization. 1999 to mid-2005, served as the international chairman of the Socialist Party.
In addition, he established the Portuguese Refugee Council and the Portuguese Consumer Association DECO, and served as the chairman of Centro de Aco Social Universitário, which started social development projects in poor communities in Lisbon in early 1970.

On September 3rd, UN Secretary-General antonio guterres accepted an exclusive interview with a reporter from China. Guterres spoke highly of China's important contribution to poverty reduction in the world, and firmly believed that China would win the battle against poverty as scheduled.
He also appreciated China's positive role in realizing the common development and prosperity of developing countries, including African countries, through South-South cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative.
