Known as Huaishui in ancient times, it is also known as "four blasphemies" with the Yangtze River, Yellow River and Jishui, and is one of the seven major rivers in China. Huaihe River originated in the northwest valley of Taibaiding, the main peak of Tongbai Mountain in the west of Tongbai County, Nanyang City, Henan Province.
The main stream flows through Henan, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces. The main stream of Huaihe River can be divided into upper, middle and lower reaches, with a total length of 1000 km and a total drop of 200 meters.

The main stream of Huaihe River originates from Laoyacha, Tongbai Mountain, Tongbai County, Henan Province, flows eastward to Henan, Hubei, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces, and downstream to Shuisan Road. The mainstream flows out of the Sanjiang River through the Sanjiang Gate, enters the Yangtze River through baoying lake and gaoyou lake, and then enters the river, with a total length of about 1 000 km.
The other one goes out of Gaoliangjianmen on the east bank of Hongze Lake, and enters the Yellow Sea at Biandan Port through the main irrigation canal in northern Jiangsu, with a total length of 168km. The third road goes out of Helmn on the northeast bank of Hongze Lake, to Lianyungang on the north bank of Hu Aishu River, and flows into Haizhou Bay via Linkou.
In 2003, the Huaihe River waterway opened to the sea, from the lower reaches of Hull Gate, near the north bank of the main irrigation canal in northern Jiangsu.
