Ban Ki-moon said in his speech that his core task will be to add confidence and vitality to the United Nations Secretariat. At the same time, he said that he would restrain his subordinates with the highest moral standards, improve their morale, professionalism and sense of responsibility, better serve Member States and restore their trust in the United Nations.
Before Ban Ki-moon was sworn in, representatives of all Member States of the United Nations General Assembly stood up and applauded to pass a resolution, paying tribute to outgoing UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and thanking him for his important contributions to the reform and development of the United Nations during his long career. Annan then delivered a speech, proud of the achievements made by the United Nations in the past 10, and thanked Member States and United Nations staff for their support, hoping that Ban Ki-moon would continue to advance the cause of the United Nations.
