He graduated from Beijing Normal University (bachelor's degree) and China Academy of Sciences (master's degree) in his early years and worked in the State Science and Technology Commission (now the Ministry of Science and Technology). After that, he went to study in the United States, 1996 received his Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, and completed two postdoctoral jobs at Miami University and New York Medical College.
