Why did Xiang Yu kill Chu Huaiwang?
Xiang Yu's decision to kill Chu Huaiwang was stupid, but no one with a little political mind would do such a stupid thing. Not only did he bear the notoriety of regicide, which chilled the hearts of Chu people, but he also left many excuses for Liu Bang. Liu Bang was ambitious and dissatisfied with Xiang Yu for a long time. Originally, according to Chu Huaiwang's agreement, the one who entered Xianyang first was the king, and Liu Bangxian entered Xianyang first, so he should be worshipped as the king of Guanzhong. But in the end, Xiang Yu sealed it to Hanzhong, which was barren at that time. Xiang Yu also said that the land of Bashu also belongs to Guanzhong.

Liu bang was very angry, but at that time, his strength was not good and he only dared to speak out. After he returned to Hanzhong, he built a plank road, concealed his position and pacified Sanqin. After the strength increased greatly, he continued to vow to crusade against Xiang Yu, but there was no suitable excuse. Xiang Yu's killing just gave Liu an excellent excuse and reason. He called on all the princes to avenge Chu Huaiwang and punish Xiang Yu, who had committed heinous crimes.

Having said that, who is Chu Huaiwang? Why did Xiang Yu kill him?

Chu Huaiwang Xiong Xin was originally an aristocrat of Chu. After Chu State was destroyed by Qin State, he lived in seclusion in the countryside, herding sheep for a living. If he hadn't met Xiang Liang, he might have died in troubled times, and his life would have been dull.

But when Xiang Liang found him, his life was no longer dull, and he was destined to leave his mark in this complicated historical turmoil. It's just that if he knows the final outcome, maybe he will hide far away, hiding in a place that will never be found by others.

Chu Huaiwang is not an ordinary shepherd boy. He comes from a noble family, is wise and courageous, has read books and seen the world. Su Shi once commented that he said:

I have tasted Yidi, a saint in the world! He thought it was fate and providence for Xiang Liang to find him. He should cherish this opportunity. He should undertake a mission and gamble for his family and himself. So he left with Xiang Liang, knowing that he was a puppet.

Later, Xiang Liang was defeated and died in the battle of Dingtao, and the situation in Chu was in crisis. Zhang Han, the general of Qin Dynasty, judged the situation and thought that the tide of Chu was gone, so he was no longer worried. Instead, he went north to attack Zhao.

In this way, Chu has a chance to breathe. This is both a challenge and an opportunity for Chu Huaiwang. Now as long as he can handle Xiang Yu, he will have a chance to become a real Chu Huaiwang. So he decided to move the capital to Pengcheng first, then reorganize the military forces of various ministries, decisively let Xiang Yu and Lv Chen take over their direct command, and at the same time take the opportunity to cultivate and promote his cronies Yi Song.

Then, he made a famous political declaration that the first person to enter Xianyang was Wang. Make the commander in chief, Xiang Yu as the deputy commander, save Zhao in the north, and make Liu Bang attack Qin in the west. At this time, Xiang Yu quit. He has always been the main commander-in-chief. Now let him be the second in command. He is unwilling. Besides, Xianyang is in the west, and he went to the north to save Zhao, which is equivalent to going further and further. So he asked Chu Huaiwang to go west with Liu Bang, and Chu Huaiwang and the veteran of Chu refused his request on the grounds that Xiang Yu's war was excessive and he often slaughtered the city. (Later, Xiang Yu slaughtered Xianyang and set fire to Epang Palace, which was more like venting personal anger. )
