Gao Yihuai, born in 1949, graduated from the Horticulture Department of Fujian Agricultural College. He is the chief scientist of the Biological Activity Research Center of the Royal New Zealand Academy of Sciences. President of Fujian Association of New Zealand.

His research on breeding and cultivation techniques of Lentinus edodes, Dictyophora dictyophora and Auricularia auricula was included in the "Spark Plan" of the State Science and Technology Commission and Fujian Province.
During the period of 1998, Gao Yihuai successfully discovered glucomannan D6, the most precious medicinal component in macrofungi, and successfully extracted it with water and ethanol at low temperature. In the same year, Gao Yihuai won two international invention gold medals for his "three-effect relationship" theory and biochemical extraction technology in the field of natural medicine. He also realized the compatibility and complementarity of different polysaccharide components for the first time in the world.
