In 2008, Russian national television held the "greatest Russian" selection activity. Although Stalin launched a large-scale purge movement and suffered from great famine during his tenure, it did not prevent him from ranking third in the list of Russian historical figures (Pushkin, Peter the Great and Lenin respectively), second only to alexander nevsky and Peter Stolypin.
Stalin is a controversial figure in Russia. Some people accused him of being a tyrant. In the1930s, it is estimated that as many as 20 million people were killed through political cleansing, exile and the establishment of gulag concentration camps. However, some people praised Stalin's brilliant achievements in repelling Nazi Germany in World War II, and carried out three five-year plans during his administration to build the Soviet Union into an industrial power. He also established collective farms all over the Soviet Union to promote agricultural mechanization and help increase agricultural output.
In 2007, Russia published a new history teaching reference book, Modern Russian History 1945-2006, and in August 2008, it published a new history teaching reference book, Russian History 1900- 1945. These two teaching reference books reevaluate Stalin's "correct historical choice".
