HKUST is an important member of the Pacific Rim University Alliance, the Global Forum of University Presidents, the Association of East Asian Research Universities, and the Association of University Presidents of Asian University Alliance and China, and has been certified by AACSB and EQUIS. The school focuses on science and technology and business management, and pays equal attention to humanities and social sciences, especially business and engineering, and has made remarkable achievements in physics, engineering, business management, biological science and biotechnology, environment and sustainable development.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is the third university in Hong Kong and the first research university in Hong Kong. It was founded by the Hong Kong government in the 1960s and 1980s to meet the needs of economic transformation. 1986 In September, the Preparatory Committee of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was established. 1991June 10, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology held the opening ceremony.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was founded because of the economic restructuring in the 1960s and 1980s.
