Chen Jiaer (1934-) was born in Shanghai. A famous physicist. Academician of China Academy of Sciences, Academician of Third World Academy of Sciences, educator, accelerator physicist. 1952 joined China. 1950 studied at Dalian Institute of Technology (Dalian University of Technology), 1954 graduated from the Physics Department of Northeast People's University of Changchun (now Jilin University). 1963- 1966 is a visiting scholar at Oxford University and Rutherford Institute of High Energy, and 1982- 1984 is a visiting scientist at the Nuclear Physics Laboratory of State University of New York at Stony Brook and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. 1August 1996 to1June 1999, president of Peking University,1June 1999 to February 2003, director and party secretary of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Since 1999, he has successively obtained honorary doctorates in science from Monroe College in California, Waseda University in Japan, Chinese University of Hong Kong and Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, and was elected as a chartered physicist of the British Physical Society and an academician of the New York Academy of Sciences. 1993 was elected as an academician of the Department of Mathematical Physics of China Academy of Sciences, and 200/kloc-0 was elected as an academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences.
