Overview of other information
The Australian men's basketball team nicknamed "Boomers" (meaning kangaroo) defeated New Zealand 2-/kloc-0-0 in the Olympic qualifying series and successfully advanced to the Beijing Olympic Games as the champion of Oceania.
The Australian team also holds the qualification record of every Olympic Games since 1972.
As the champion of Oceania in 17, Australia won the fourth place three times in the four Olympic Games since 1988, and lost the opportunity to win the first Olympic medal. In the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, their record was the worst in 32 years, ranking ninth, only slightly better than Oceania's old rival New Zealand.
American-born head coach Brian Goorjian coached the Australian team at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. He is also one of the most successful coaches in the Australian Men's Basketball League (NBL) and has led the team to win five championships.
The Australian team is mainly composed of players from NBL, but there are also players from European League, American University League and NBA-the most famous one is andrew bogut of Milwaukee Bucks.
Bogut missed the Olympic qualifying series in Australia and New Zealand, but he was still the key figure in winning medals in Australia.
