Guan Qiao is from Xiangfen County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province. 1935 was born in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province on July 2nd. After the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), his father was transferred to Beijing to work, and his family moved to Beijing. Guan Qiao studied in Beijing Academy. Educated by school and family, Guan Qiao gradually understood how important it is for a country to develop its industry. 1952, the first national unified examination for colleges and universities, Guan Qiao solemnly filled in the majors of geology, water conservancy and aviation. Soon, Guan Qiao accidentally received a special admission notice, asking him to report to the Soviet Preparatory Department of Beijing Russian Specialized School as a preparatory student sent by New China to study in the Soviet Union. According to the needs of national economic construction, he was assigned to study welding specialty. Since then, Guan Qiao has forged an indissoluble bond with welding.

1September, 953, Guan Qiao was sent by the state to study at Bowman Institute of Technology in Moscow, Soviet Union. Guan Qiao studied abroad for nearly 10 years, leaving a long memory: a knowledgeable tutor, a young classmate, a straight-a diploma, and an associate doctor's defense.

After returning to China, Guan Qiao worked in Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Technology (625 institutes) and served as an engineer, senior engineer, researcher, director of research office and deputy director of science and technology commission. He is also the director of the Academic Committee of the Key Laboratory of High-energy Beam Processing Technology of National Defense Science and Technology, the director of the Academic Committee of the Key Laboratory of Aviation Connection Technology, an adjunct professor and doctoral supervisor of Beihang University, and an adjunct professor of Tsinghua University. 1994, was elected as an academician of China Academy of Engineering, and is now the head of the Department of Mechanical and Transportation Engineering of China Academy of Engineering. He used to be the chairman of China Welding Society, the vice-chairman of International Welding Society (IIW) and a member of academic committee.

He is also a deputy to the 11th, 12th and 13th National People's Congress of China, the 6th National People's Congress and a member of the 9th China People's Political Consultative Conference.

On July 9th, 2000, at the opening ceremony of the 53rd annual meeting of the International Welding Society held in Florence, IIW, M.Bramat, Secretary General of IIW, introduced Guan Qiao's outstanding achievements and contributions to the meeting. Subsequently, Mr. Bevan Braithwaite, Chairman of IIW, personally awarded the Arada Jiming Award of Guan Qiao International Welding Society 1999.

Arada Yoshiaki Award was established by the International Welding Society in resolution 1994. It aims to reward experts who have made outstanding achievements in the basic research of welding science and technology and related fields, and are recognized by the international welding community as making significant contributions to the development of welding engineering and related disciplines. Lifetime Achievement Award is elected by the evaluation committee of IIW Academic Committee from candidates nominated by more than 40 IIW member countries every year, and becomes the only winner of that year after being approved by IIW Executive Committee. Guan Qiao became the first China expert to win this international award. He once again won glory for his motherland and added luster to the aviation industry.

In the past 40 years, Guan Qiao has made great achievements in many important fields of welding science and technology development in China. 1988 won the title of "young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions" at the national level, 1989 won the title of "national advanced worker", 1989 won the aviation gold medal, 1992 won the highest award in the aviation industry, 1996 won the first prize of Guanghua Science and Technology Fund.
