In Shanghai, Zhang Ruifang and other five generations of actors performed the play on the same stage to pay tribute to him. In 2004, Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing House collected Du Xuan's life scripts, essays, poems and movie scripts, and published eight volumes of Collected Works of Du Xuan. On the afternoon of August 23rd, 2004, Du Xuan, aged 9 1 year, died in Shanghai Huadong Hospital.

During Comrade Du Xuan's serious illness, the leaders of the Municipal Party Committee, the Municipal Government and the Propaganda Department of the Municipal Party Committee visited the hospital many times. After the death of Comrade Du Xuan, Chen Liangyu, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee, Yin, deputy secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Yang Xiaodu, member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, propaganda minister and vice mayor, went to the hospital or telephoned to express their condolences over the death of Comrade Du Xuan and their families.

The farewell ceremony of Comrade Du Xuan's body is scheduled to be held at 9: 00 am on August 29th at Longhua Funeral Home. Tai 'an Road, Du Xuan's former residence, the mourning hall is located in the study, which is filled with flower baskets sent by all parties. Surrounded by lilies, Anthurium and white roses, there is a portrait of Du Xuan, in which he laughs heartily. Daughter Gui Weiming told reporters that this photo was taken in May 2002 when Du Xuan and his family went to Ningbo to play. Two years ago, Du Xuan was hospitalized for incomplete intestinal obstruction and has been living in East China Hospital ever since. This is a complication caused by lung infection. "He left suddenly." Gui Weiming's eyes turned red in an instant. On August 2 1 day, the doctor told his family that the old man's condition suddenly deteriorated. Two days later, he left us forever. Gui Weiming said that Du Xuan had made everything clear when he was sober before he died. He asked for a simple funeral, but he wanted to make it "decent", which was in line with his constant respect for himself. The reporter learned that even in the hospital, the elderly insist on taking a bath, changing clothes and shaving every day, and facing people neatly and refreshing; He has been practicing calligraphy in the hospital, and nurses and cleaners often ask him for calligraphy. He came to everyone, but many people who wanted to buy words with money were rejected by him.

After the age of 85, he still insisted on writing. He wrote a drama "Master Hongyi" and a drama "Biography of Tian Han". As a result, he was delayed by illness. He also wrote a short play about two young friends who started a "yellow romance" when they got old. The family said that the story was calm and warm, reflecting the love view of that generation of intellectuals. Du Xuan is a sentimental person. He always misses his teachers and friends deeply. After Tian Han's play The Knockout was staged, he always wanted to see it, but he missed the performance because of illness. Finally, he watched the video of the play in the ward and gave a pertinent evaluation. On Mr. Ba Jin's centenary birthday, he personally participated in the celebration and wrote several poems on the spot. In 2003, Shanghai Drama Art Center rearranged Unforgettable Years. He came among young directors and actors to exchange creative experience with them. He said, "My writing talent is limited, but I write with deep affection." People also repay this respectable old man with the same affection. Before the operation, Yin, deputy secretary of the municipal party committee, visited him many times. Before and after he entered the operating room, Wang Zhongwei, the propaganda minister of the municipal party committee, made some phone calls to ask about the situation. During his hospitalization, many people, including the leaders of this newspaper, visited him. Ba Jin's daughter Li Xiaolin often walks into his ward. In the last week of his life, Li Xiaolin said to him, "I love you, Dad." During his more than two years in hospital, his family has been accompanying him in turn for 24 hours. "Family ties continued his life," Gui Weiming said. Du Xuan is very concerned about the literary newspapers he participates in. At the beginning of 2003, he also told the reporter who interviewed him in this newspaper that we are all constrained by irresistible natural laws, but the Literary and Art Newspaper has become an integral part of China's literary career today. Running a newspaper should be regarded as a career, not just a job. In 2004, Comrade Du Xuan died in Shanghai at the age of 9 1. I miss it here.
