Ma Chao (176—222), a general of Shu in the Three Kingdoms, was named Meng Qi. Because of its extraordinary appearance and exquisite costumes, it is called "Ma Jinchao". Ma Chao was born in Maoling, Fufeng County (now northeast of Xingping, Shaanxi Province) and was born in a famous family. His father, Ma Teng, was named Shoucheng, and his father, Ma Su, was named Shuo. He worked as a county captain in Tianshui, and later lost his post in Longxi and married the girl Ma Teng. Therefore, Ma Chao has a quarter of Qiang descent.
