A Brief Introduction to the Characters in Great Expectations
1, Pip

The original Pip lived under the care of Joe, the blacksmith's brother-in-law. Although he was annoyed by his sister's nagging and uncle Pumblechook's preaching, his life remained calm. But this temporary balance was quickly broken. When Pip met the beautiful and arrogant Miss Estella in Shatizhuang, he realized that he had lived a "miserable life for the inferior" and lived in an unbalanced state from then on.

At this moment, an external force appeared: a rich man who did not want to be named was willing to fund him to go to London for a good education. Under the action of this external force, Pip regained a new balance. The development of the story is full of twists and turns. When Pip found out that his patron was a fugitive on death row, his new balance was broken again. Finally, Pip forgave the escaped prisoner and, with the help of his friends, lived a self-reliant life overseas.

Pip at the beginning of the story has Dickens' intermediate moral quality, that is, integrity and selflessness, so he is rewarded accordingly: life is sweeter than bitterness. But with the loss of these qualities, especially when he went to London to learn to be a gentleman, he also learned some dishonest words and deeds such as snobbery and isolating old friends. The author immediately rewarded him with a severe punishment: he was seriously injured and finally lost the opportunity to "go home". But after Magwitch's death, Pip once again showed Dickens' noble, honest and kind moral quality, and Pip was rewarded accordingly, that is, he regained his peace of mind.

2. Estella

Estella, what is hidden under her beautiful appearance is a cold and artificial heart. Although she is well dressed and educated abroad, she lacks many qualities in the author's moral system. She plays with Pip's feelings and takes pleasure in breaking other people's hearts, which naturally will not have a good result in Dickens' narrative structure. Sure enough, Estella finally married a snob, suffered a lot and ruined her happiness.

However, compared with Miss Havisham, Estella still has an "honest" nature. For example, she repeatedly reminded Pip not to get deeper and deeper into Miss Havisham's trap. Almost every interaction between her and Pip is accompanied by this kind of persuasion. Perhaps Dickens thinks that Estella's tragedy is caused by her education and environment, so she can't take full responsibility for it. So at the end of the novel, he arranged a fairly good ending for Estella: seeing Pip again and hinting that they would never part.

3. Good Wei Xiang

In the novel, Miss Havisham attracts readers with her strange clothes, unusual lifestyle and unique experience. She is a simple and arrogant lady in high society. She is madly in love with Wimbledon, but how does she know that Wimbledon really cares about her property? So on the wedding night, abandoned, she couldn't accept the heavy blow and lived in pain.

Many years later, when Pip first met Miss Havisham, she was still wearing the clothes she wore on her wedding day, and the layout of the whole room was the same as before, which showed that Miss Havisham was still immersed in great pain. She used all this to remind herself to take revenge on men, and Miss Estella was the product of this idea. Miss Havisham used Miss Estella to get back at men. She first made Pip fall in love with Miss Estella, but she refused to let her stay with him and married Miss Estella to a bad man.

4. Joe (name)

Joe is Pip's brother-in-law. He is a kind man with self-sacrifice spirit. When he married Pip's sister, he let Pip live with them. Joe told Pip that they were distant friends, and he did. Although Pip was alienated from Joe when he went to London for a good education, he was arrogant and even looked down on him, but Joe still cared about Pip and showed a vague concern for him.

Joe once told Pip that they couldn't sit together as if they were at home in London, which showed that Joe strongly disapproved of Pip going to London. But even so, when Pip's hope of inheriting property was dashed, he owed a lot of debts and was seriously ill, it was Joe who gave him great spiritual comfort and even helped him pay off his debts.

5. Herbert

Pip first met Herbert in the garden of Shadis Manor. At that time, he was still a white-faced boy. He challenged Pip and they had a fight. Many years later, they met again in London. After Pip became a gentleman? Herbert became his best friend and main partner. He affectionately called Pip "Gandell". He is the son of Miss Havisham's cousin Matthew Herbert. He is eager to be a businessman so that he can have enough money to marry Clara Barry.

6.wemmick

Staff of Jaggers Law Firm, friend of Pip. He is one of the most incredible characters in Great Expectations. At work, he is diligent, cynical and sarcastic, especially like "movable property"; In Walaas's family, he is cheerful and humorous, and takes good care of "old dad".

7. Miss Hao

A rich and eccentric woman lives in a big house called Shadis Manor near Pip village. Her manic personality often makes people think that she is insane. She always walks around the room in a faded wedding dress. There is a rotten banquet on the table. All the clocks in the room stop at 8: 40. When she was young, Miss Havisham was abandoned by her fiance on her wedding day. From then on, she was full of hatred for all men. She intends to train Estella as a tool to retaliate against men and train this beautiful enchantment to break men's hearts.
