1967, according to the needs of the country, the air force built a combat readiness airport in Korla. With the development of Korla economy, Korla Civil Aviation Station was formally established and opened to traffic on June 197 1. The establishment of Korla Airport has improved the traffic conditions in Bazhou, promoted the opening up and economic development, played a huge role in special tasks such as emergency rescue and disaster relief, and achieved good social and economic benefits. At the end of 1980s, with the development of Tarim oil, Korla Airport undertook the task of ensuring oil flights. 1989 from 2007 to 2007, Korla airport has guaranteed more than 20,000 flights of various types of fuel. For various reasons, Korla Airport was suspended in September. 1998. After many consultations between the military and civil aviation, Korla Airport officially resumed navigation in April 2003. Since the resumption of flights, the density of airport flights has increased month by month, reaching 9 flights a day at the peak, with the highest annual passenger throughput of 227,085 passengers. The transportation production index has maintained a relatively stable trend. The successful operation of shuttle flights of Korla Airlines, as a pilot of other airports in Xinjiang, has promoted the economic development of Xinjiang.
The airport was relocated and rebuilt in September 2003. The relocated Korla Airport is located in the southwest of Korla City, about17km away from the city center. The relocation project of Korla Airport is a key project in China and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The airport is a military-civilian airport with a flight zone of 4D, with a joint investment of 457.4 million yuan by the state and local governments. The design meets the requirements of 350,000 passengers, 6,300 tons of cargo and mail throughput and 5,000 aircraft take-off and landing in 20 10. Long-term planning has the function of alternate international flights, and it is the second largest airport in Xinjiang after Urumqi International Airport. There are many flights to Urumqi every day, and there are flights to Hami, Beijing Capital Airport, Nanyuan Airport, Chengdu, Zhengzhou, Chongqing and other places every week, but there are fewer flights outside Xinjiang every week.
On July 18, 2003, the relocation project of Korla Airport with a total investment of 457.4 million yuan was held in the senior town of Yuli County, about 17.5 kilometers away from the center of Korla.

Korla is an important town in southern Xinjiang and the capital of Bazhou. Compared with the increasing traffic volume, the original airport is far from meeting the needs of local economic development because of its small area. Moreover, with the rapid development of economic construction and urbanization in Korla, the contradiction between flight safety and urban development of the old airport is becoming more and more serious in the construction area of urban planning. At the same time, the old airport is far from meeting the requirements of local economic development and civil aviation development in Xinjiang due to poor facilities and insufficient service support capacity. 1995 to carry out the site selection and feasibility study of Korla airport relocation project; In June 2002, the project was approved by the State Council and the Central Military Commission. In February 2003, the National Development and Reform Commission and the General Staff approved the feasibility study report of the project. On September 17 of the same year, the National Development and Reform Commission approved the project to start, and on September 20 of the same year, the relocation project broke ground.
