The predecessor of Southern Medical University is Guangzhou Medical College. Guangzhou Medical College, founded in 1954, is the earliest undergraduate medical university directly under the Ministry of Health in Chinese mainland. In 2004, Guangzhou Medical College was upgraded to an undergraduate comprehensive university and renamed Southern Medical University.
