On the eve of liberation, Hunan University of Science and Technology was founded in Xiangbei Institute of Architecture. In 2003, it was formed by the merger of Xiangtan Institute of Technology and Xiangtan Teachers College. It is a "first-class university in China" jointly established by Hunan Provincial People's Government, State Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, Hunan Provincial People's Government and former state administration of work safety.
