The school was founded on 1954. In 2000, Shanghai University of Science and Technology was formed by the merger of Shanghai Institute of Light Industry, Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy and Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology. In 2006, the former Shanghai Spice College of the Ministry of Light Industry was merged into the school.
