1886 passed the Imperial University Order, and Imperial University was founded. It is the first university in Japan and the predecessor of the present University of Tokyo. Because it was the only one at that time, we didn't add "Tokyo" as a difference, but called it "Imperial University".

The second university is Kyoto Imperial University, which was founded in 1 1 year later.

Since then, seven universities have been established, including nine "Imperial Universities".

There are seven in Japan:

Imperial University (Tokyo Imperial University), now the University of Tokyo.

Kyoto Imperial University, now Kyoto University.

Northeastern Imperial University, now Northeastern University

Kyushu Imperial University, now Kyushu University.

Imperial University of Hokkaido, now Hokkaido University.

Osaka Imperial University, now Osaka University.

Imperial University of Nagoya, now Nagoya University.

Also in the Japanese colony at that time, South Korea and Taiwan Province Province also created two:

Imperial University in Beijing, now Seoul University in South Korea.

Imperial University of Taipei, now Taiwan Province Provincial University.
