First of all, please allow me, on behalf of my colleagues, to express my warmest congratulations to the students of Grade 202/KLOC-0 who entered school today (September 2)! Every level in Tsinghua people is special, but you still need to be more special. Among the seven coronaviruses, most of you have witnessed the two most dangerous ones. One is still in its infancy, and the other stands out and comes to Tsinghua's arms.
I believe that the connection between these two epidemics has been repeatedly mentioned by your family and friends this summer, and it has also added a touch of legend to your growth experience.
It is also a very special experience to speak to you as a teacher representative. After receiving the notice last week, I have been recalling my whole life since I was admitted to this school from 1995.
I thought a lot and dreamed for several nights. After checking my college report card, the school decided to disqualify me from this speech. I was very disappointed and depressed. Believe me, you often had such dreams when you were a freshman. After all, it is a normal stress reaction to suspect that something too beautiful suddenly comes to your door.
However, the experience of waking up these nights has led me to find the key words to share with you today. Because I found that what really accompanied us to grow up was always the fear of failure, or the failure itself. Therefore, as a teacher, I especially want to share with you several functions that failure may play in college life for your reference.
First of all, failure will let you see the boundaries of your ability. For many of you, the reason why you can't get high marks in the exam is entirely because there is a total score limit. Therefore, you should be willing to test when failure will come in a broader knowledge space and more abundant independent time. Because just like the high jump, you can only see your maximum elevation angle when you can't jump over it.
Don't worry, my colleagues and I have arranged this high jump. I make a small advertisement. In addition to the traditional hard dishes for freshmen in Tsinghua, the school has also started the compulsory course of "Writing and Communication" from 20 18. Your senior said that this is "a course at least as difficult as calculus", and our writing center will wait for you to find your own boundary in this difficult course.
Of course, knowing your boundaries is not always a pleasant experience. The other side of "jumping out of the comfort zone" is "jumping into the discomfort zone". In addition to advising you to seek professional help from the school when you fail, I also advise you to always remember your initial intention of being admitted to Tsinghua. Glory is not what you came here for. Through our own efforts, we can open up new possibilities on a platform that can only be reached by jumping. Therefore, in the face of future failures, you should learn to be patient.
Second, failure will let you see the scenery beyond winning or losing. Our past success is usually related to winning or losing. One point difference, heaven and earth. However, macroeconomists have long pointed out that once any abstract index is used for evaluation, it will definitely lose its measurement value. Before you came to Tsinghua, you might have been tired of the one-way winning-losing system. However, just because you are the winner, you don't want to be branded as "Versailles".
So, everyone, it's time to put down the burden of your idols! Instead of focusing all our energy on how to scientifically improve the grade point of 0. 1, we should bear this small failure on the premise of laying a good foundation and put more energy into more meaningful knowledge exploration and creation practice as soon as possible. "Aim high, do something but don't do something, and achieve something", which was General Secretary Xi Jinping's earnest request to the majority of young students when he visited Tsinghua University on April 6, 2009.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you want to be a big country, you must look at the scenery ahead and talk less about winning or losing for a while. Third, failure is likely to let you see the world outside yourself. After coming to Tsinghua, you will soon find that in almost all aspects, you are no longer the omnipotent you were in middle school, and loss is inevitable. However, if you can learn to look directly at others' achievements and humbly seek their support, you are likely to open up a new world in cooperation with others.
