Jilin Animation Institute, referred to as Jidong for short, was founded in June 2000 and approved by the Ministry of Education as an independent private undergraduate college in 2008. The school is an art school with animation tourism as the main body, the first institution of higher learning in China that specializes in training animation game talents, and the largest animation school in the world, which is known as "the cradle of animation game talents in China".

The school has 12 professional colleges, namely Animation Art College, Comics College, Game College, Design College, Product Modeling College, Film Modeling College, Television and New Media College, Cultural Industry Business School, Virtual Reality College, Civil Aviation College and International Film and Television Special Effects College. There are 34 undergraduate majors, which are distributed in five disciplines: art, literature, engineering, management and economy.

There are 880 teachers in the school, including 507 full-time teachers and 327 double-qualified teachers, who have industry background.
