Wuhan University, referred to as Wuda for short, located in Wuhan, is a comprehensive national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC).

The history of the school can be traced back to 1893, and Zhang Zhidong, governor of Huguang, established a self-improvement school at the invitation of the Qing government. The word "constantly striving for self-improvement" comes from the Book of Changes, which says "a gentleman is always striving for self-improvement". The school was originally a "self-improvement school", and the name also took this meaning.

"Hongyi" comes from The Analects of Confucius, saying that "without Hongyi, there is a long way to go in Xiu Yuan". It means ambitious, strong and decisive. This word was included in the school motto "Ming Cheng Hong Yi" in 1930s.
