The motto of Wuhan University:

The school motto is self-improvement, loyalty, truth-seeking and innovation.

1993, on the basis of soliciting opinions from all sides and after deliberation by the school affairs Committee, the new motto of Wuhan University is determined to be self-improvement, perseverance, seeking truth from facts and being brave in innovation.

The word "constantly striving for self-improvement" comes from the Book of Changes, which says "a gentleman is always striving for self-improvement". Self-respect means self-respect, continuous self-improvement and continuous progress. Self-improvement is the traditional virtue of the Chinese nation, and it should be regarded as a kind of training to achieve the cause. The school was originally a "self-improvement school", and the name also took this meaning.

"Hongyi" comes from The Analects of Confucius, saying that "without Hongyi, there is a long way to go in Xiu Yuan". It means ambitious, strong and decisive. This word was included in the school motto "Ming Cheng Hong Yi" in 1930s.

The use of "self-improvement" and "Hongyi" not only summarizes the above meanings, but also reflects the depth of history and the continuation of school spirit.

"Seeking truth" means learning, trying to explore the law and pursuing the truth. The language of "Han Shu" is "Make the past serve the present and seek truth from facts".

"Pioneering" means pioneering, innovating and making continuous progress.

In a word, it means to inherit and carry forward the great spirit of self-improvement of the Chinese nation, set up the lofty ambition of studying hard and actively contributing to the prosperity of the country, strive to explore the objective laws of things, open up new prospects, make new achievements, run the socialist Wuhan University well and make new contributions to the country.
