There are two 985 normal schools, namely Beijing Normal University and East China Normal University. The 985 Project is an important decision made by the government of China in May 1998, aiming at building a world-class university. The first batch of universities that entered the 985 Project included 9 universities including Peking University, Tsinghua University, China University of Science and Technology, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University and Harbin Institute of Technology.
