Nantong University, referred to as "Tongda University" for short, is a comprehensive university jointly established by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Transport, a member of fifteen key construction universities in Jiangsu Province, and a pilot university of the "Excellent Doctor Education Training Plan" and "Excellent Teacher Training Plan" of the Ministry of Education. The history of the school can be traced back to the private Nantong Medical College and Nantong Textile College founded by Mr. Zhang Jian, a famous industrialist and educator in modern times, on 19 12. The school is one of the first units in China with the right to confer master's degrees, and it is the birthplace of the typical spirit of "Mo Wensui" in spiritual civilization construction. In May 2004, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Nantong Medical College, Nantong Institute of Technology and Nantong Normal University were merged.
