Shanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established with the approval of the State Council in 1982, started by students from the former Shanxi Medical College in 1986, was formally established with the approval of the former State Education Commission in 1989, was awarded a master's degree in 2000, and was renamed Shanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine with the approval of the Ministry of Education in 2006. In the same year, it was confirmed as a doctoral degree awarding unit in Shanxi Province.
