There are two Southwest Universities for Nationalities in Chengdu, but one enrolls students in some areas, one in Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Jilin and Shaanxi, and two in other provinces.

The school is a comprehensive university for nationalities directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, formerly known as Southwest University for Nationalities. Founded in July of 1950, it was formally established in June of 195 1 year. In April of 2003, it was renamed Southwest University for Nationalities. In 2005, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and Chengdu were established.
