. The first chapter of "University" says:

The way of university is to be moral, to be close to the people and to stop at perfection.

"Mingde", "being close to the people" and "stopping at perfection" constitute the basic idea and "program" of the university. Academic circles have always had different views on what is "Ming Ming De". Neo-Confucians in the Song and Ming Dynasties, such as Zhu and Wang Yangming, all understood "Mingde" as an empty but not ambiguous heart, and thought that "Ming De" was the invention of the original heart, but the difference was that the former regarded it as "sex" and the latter regarded it as "heart". Some contemporary scholars often associate "Mingde" with Meng Si's theory of good nature, thinking that "Mingde" is the expression of "Mingde" in The Doctrine of the Mean, and saying "Mingde" means that "Mingde" is manifested in the heart and sex is presented in the heart through practice. "(3) These views are obviously difficult for people to agree with and may not conform to the original meaning of the university. Because from the perspective of ideological history, although the concept of "Mingde" appeared earlier-the university quoted Gao Kang and Ke Mingde to explain "Mingde" as proof-from the perspective of human nature, "Mingde" appeared later. Judging from the full text of Daxue, the word "Mingde" is still in the stage of being unconnected with human nature and not regarded as intrinsic, which is an important feature of "Mingde" of Daxue and a reflection of its early publication. Without this, it is obviously not in line with the reality of university thought. On the other hand, Mr. Mou Zongsan thinks that the words "virtue" or "monarch virtue" quoted in "University" refer to the theory of virtue, and it seems that he didn't realize its inherent essence at that time. (4) Mr. Xu also said that "the virtue in universities can only be explained by wise behavior, not by heart." (5) From the perspective of the era of "University", it is not an exaggeration to say that "Mingde" contains the meanings of "virtue" and "wise behavior", but this is not the focus of "Mingde" in "University", because "Virtue" and "wise behavior" are rarely mentioned in the full text of "University", on the contrary, it repeatedly emphasizes "integrity". "Because the above is a conditional hint, this passage is actually saying: If you want to clarify the virtue in the world, you must first fix your body, and then unite your family and rule the country. Obviously, "Ming Ming De" means "repairing his body", and "Ming Ming De is in the world" means that everyone in the world can repair his body on this basis. Confucius' interpretation of "Ming Ming De" means "expressing one's own virtue is more obvious", which points out this point. Since "Mingde" mainly refers to "self-cultivation", it should include "integrity", "sincerity", "attitude" and "knowledge". We should understand "Mingde" in universities from this point of view.

There has always been a debate about "being close to the people" after "Mingde" in academic history. Cheng Yi and Zhu advocated "people-friendly" as "new people", and Cheng Yi made the final volume (VI) of "University", making two changes to the text of "University". One is to change "if you have resentment, you can't be right" to "if you have resentment, you can't be right", and the other is "to be". Zhu also believes that "people who are close to the people today are unreasonable and literally pushed; "The newcomers are well-founded." (7) He made a bet on "being close to the people" in "University Chapters": "Dear, as good as new." However, there are also many people who oppose Cheng and Zhu. For example, Wang Yangming once argued with disciple Xu Ai that "being close to the people should follow old books" and was listed in the first chapter of Biography. He believes that "being close to the people means self-cultivation, and saying that people are new is biased", which shows the opposition between the two. There are some words in Guodian bamboo slips, such as "teaching people to be new (pro)" (the way of Tang Yu), "disloyalty is not new (pro), not new (pro) and not loving" (five elements), in which "pro" is written as "new", indicating that "pro" and "new" can be universal (8 However, it is not enough to be sure. One is "being close to the people" and writing "new people", as Guo Dianjian did; First, "being close to the people" leads to "being close to the people", which needs to be further judged from the ideological content. Zhu and others changed "people-friendly" to "new people", mainly? Spying? Is it better to blow harder than scratch? This stick is long and thin. I don't know what to do. Look at it? Gongye Chang), and the meaning of "nurturing" is greater than that of "teaching", so "being close to the people" is obviously more consistent with the consistent proposition of early Confucianism than "being new to the people". What Wang Yangming said may be aimed at the disadvantages of post-Confucianism, such as "emphasizing education over nurturing" or even "teaching without nurturing", which has its own value (9), but it is not enough to solve the debate between "being close to the people" and "being new to the people" in universities, because although it puts forward the political ideal of "nurturing, harmony, governance and equality", it is mainly "teaching" (morality) ratio. Therefore, judging from the ideological character of The University, "Xinmin" is still closer to the original meaning than "being close to the people". In addition, from the perspective of context, "being close to the people" in universities mainly corresponds to "keeping the house in order" and "governing the country", and the author still focuses on "morality" and "teaching" when discussing these contents, such as "the benevolence of a family and the prosperity of a country; A letter, a goodsky letter; One person is greedy, and one country is chaotic. ..... all say one word, one person governs the country. " "When you are old, people will advocate filial piety. When you grow up, people will promote your brother. When you are lonely, the people will not be doubled. " "A gentleman is good for virtue and wants to kiss his relatives. The villain is happy and beneficial. " This also shows that "being close to the people" of "universities" should be "newcomers".

The "supreme goodness" after Xinmin is often understood by predecessors as "the journey of supreme goodness". For example, Confucius said: "If you stop at the best, you can say that the way of university stops at the best trip." Zhu also believes that the understanding that "the best is the most natural thing" may come from the following passage: "Be benevolent; Being a minister ends with respect; Being a son stops at filial piety; Being a father stops at kindness; Make friends with China people and end with a letter. " Benevolence, respect, filial piety and kindness here all refer to specific interpersonal behaviors, and this passage is an explanation and exertion of "stopping at the best", so people often understand the "best" of universities. But after careful analysis, it is not difficult to find that there are many problems in this understanding. First of all, it does not reveal the relationship between "supreme goodness" and "pure morality" and "being close to the people", which makes people unable to see the relationship between them; Secondly, the pre-Qin Confucian concepts of "benevolence", "respect" and "faith" often refer to both the universal moral norms applicable to all people and the specific provisions of interpersonal relationships; It is often the former rather than the latter that is related to "supreme goodness", so it is obviously inappropriate to understand "supreme goodness" as a "journey to perfection" of specific interpersonal relationships. In fact, it is the same as the previous words, such as "the poem says that the country is thousands of miles away and the people stop here", "the poem says that the wild yellow bird stops at the corner of the hill" and "Confucius said: stop here, know it, and you can be inferior to the bird". Wang Yangming said that "the best is the best, and the well-known people are also the best." He noticed that the relationship between "supreme goodness" and "supreme goodness" and "being close to the people" is undoubtedly better than the previous explanation, but he thought that "supreme goodness is the noumenon of the mind" (in "On Practice"), which is obviously "six classics note me". In fact, "stop at the best" is the following "Mingde is superior to the world", and these two "universities" are internally related. At the beginning of the article, the author first put forward three programs of "Mingde", "Xinmin" and "stop at the best", and in the paragraph of "ancient desire is better than the world", he adopted "cultivation, harmony, governance and harmony"
