I want to learn Sanskrit.
If you want to learn Sanskrit by yourself, you must have strong perseverance and learning ability. I suggest you have the opportunity to take a regular Sanskrit class.

Peking University Oriental Language Department, founded by Mr. Ji Xianlin, is the most authoritative Sanskrit teaching institution in China. Sanskrit (Sanskrit, Pali) majors don't enroll students every year. The latest one is Grade 2005, and it has been 20 years since the last one. Graduate students enroll students every year, but if they are not familiar with the teachers majoring in Bamba, they are likely to switch to other majors (a senior I know switched to Urdu at first and then to Bamba six months later). In addition, they also offer basic Sanskrit courses for all students of Peking University.

They mainly use two books. One is the Sanskrit Basic Reader (we used to call it Stanzler), which was translated by Mr. Ji. The original book was Sanskrit Elements.

Adolf Friedrich Stanzler. The other is a Sanskrit primer by Edward Delavan Perry, English version, without translation.

Both books can be downloaded online. They each have their own characteristics. Stanzler finished all grammar at once, which is also the Sanskrit learning method that Mr. Ji and Mr. Duan Qing admire most. The basic idea of Sanskrit introduction is to learn grammar alone, that is, step by step, which is more suitable for self-study.

In addition, I recommend another textbook, which is widely used in American universities now. It's thick, but the explanation is simple.

Devava-n.i-praves/ika- (): Introduction to Sanskrit,

Robert P. Goldman and Sally J. Sutherland Goldman

University of California at Berkeley,

2002

This book can be borrowed from Peking University Library. Another advantage of this book is that it uses a lot of bonini grammar terms, which is conducive to further study of traditional Indian grammar.

It took Brahmins in ancient India twelve years to learn Sanskrit, which shows its difficulty. Sanskrit, like all Indo-European languages, has changed in sex, number and case, but it is more complicated. A noun in Sanskrit has eight cases (there are six in Latin and only three in English: nominative, accusative and possessive, only pronouns and a few nouns), three numbers (singular, even and plural, but there is no even number in English) and three personalities (feminine, masculine and neutral, and there is no sexual change in English), that is to say, an ordinary noun has 8 * 3. Therefore, learning Sanskrit is an extremely hard work. I have studied Sanskrit for nearly two years with 05 undergraduate students, and I often do my homework until 2 o'clock in the middle of the night when I am a beginner. Now I have started reading "Give Up All", which has got rid of the original hard stage, but it is still very hard.

Besides Peking University, as far as I know, Associate Professor Qian Wenzhong of Fudan University also offers Sanskrit elective courses. Sun Yat-sen University is about to offer Sanskrit courses. After September, a teacher and sister doctor majoring in Fan Ba from Peking University will go to Sun Yat-sen University to teach after graduation.

In addition, insert another sentence. Learning Sanskrit is extremely important for learning Buddhist knowledge. I insist on learning Sanskrit because of my Buddhist beliefs. Unfortunately, many people don't realize this. Chinese translation is often vague, and if you don't understand Sanskrit, it will easily lead to misunderstanding. For a simple example, the Sanskrit version of the Heart Sutra says that many people take it literally in Chinese and think that the Heart Sutra is about or related to mind cultivation. Actually, it's not like this. Mind, expressing conscious activities or psychological phenomena; The heart in the Heart Sutra means "heart" and "core" and has nothing to do with psychological phenomena. Heart Sutra is the core or "mind essence" of Prajna Sutra, so its full name is Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra. For other questions about Sanskrit, please refer to my other Baidu to know the answer.
