At present, there is no university called Shanghai Railway Institute. There was one, but in May 1995, Shanghai Railway Institute and Shanghai Railway Medical College merged to form Shanghai Railway University, and then in April 2000, Tongji University and Shanghai Railway University merged to form the new Tongji University.

So Tongji University now has some traditions of Shanghai Railway Institute. Tongji University is a key university, a national first-class university, and enrolls students in the college entrance examination.

Shanghai Railway University is a multidisciplinary comprehensive university approved by the State Education Commission. In order to adapt to the great development of railway construction and cultivate advanced engineering, medicine, economy and management talents, it is characterized by the combination of medicine and engineering. It was formed by the merger of the former Shanghai Railway Institute and Shanghai Railway Medical College, under the dual leadership of the Ministry of Railways and Shanghai, with the Ministry of Railways as the main management system.

Headquartered in the northwest of Shanghai West Railway Station, Hu Jia Expressway entrance, the branch is located in the north of Shanghai Railway Station, at the intersection of Inner Ring Road and Chengdu Road Elevated. The school covers an area of 350,000 square meters (equivalent to 520 mu), with a total area of 256,000 square meters. The campus is a famous "garden unit" in Shanghai, with green grass, shady trees and pleasant scenery.
