Dalian University of Technology is the first new-type ordinary university founded by China Production Party on the eve of the founding of New China for the construction of new China industrial system. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, a national key construction university of "21Project" and "985 Project", and a class A construction university of world-class universities.

At present, the school has three Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run schools (Ritsumeikan University in Japan, Leicester University in England and Belarusian National University) and 1 Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run schools (University of California, Irvine, USA).

The school has more than 150 overseas exchange programs, including national public schools, joint training, exchange learning, short-term mutual visits and so on. In recent years, more than 2,000 students have been sent to foreign ministries for short-term exchanges every year.
