If the baby is born with a low weight, be sure to give him iron as soon as possible. This is a new study recently published in the Journal of Pediatrics.
It is found that if the newborn babies weigh 2-2.5 kg, giving proper iron supplements in time will significantly reduce the possibility of iron deficiency anemia when they grow up.
A considerable number of pediatric studies show that infants with low birth weight are more likely to suffer from certain diseases in adulthood, among which iron deficiency anemia is the most likely. Iron plays an important role in the production of hemoglobin, and also promotes the development and growth of baby's brain. The typical manifestations of iron deficiency in infants are slow development of nervous system, serious expression and little smile. It will also affect the early intellectual development of infants, especially attention and short-term memory.
So, how to supplement iron is scientific? Experts from Moi University in Sweden and Karolinska Medical College pointed out that during the second and sixth months after birth, babies can take 2 mg of iron supplements per kilogram of body weight every day. At the same time, experts also suggest that babies over 4 months old can add some iron-rich foods in their diet, such as fish paste and egg yolk. Low-birth-weight premature infants should be supplemented with vitamin E and vitamin C when they are 2 months old.
