Professor Xu Lizhi is currently the President of the University of Hong Kong. In May 2002, Professor Xu was officially appointed as the 14 President of the University of Hong Kong, and took office on 1 day in September 2002.

Before coming to work in Hong Kong, Professor Xu Lizhi was the director and chief geneticist of the genetics and genetic bioengineering program of the Research Center of Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. He is also a university professor at the University of Toronto and a professor of cystic fibrosis at H.E. Sellers. Professor Xu is also the former chairman of HUGO, an international organization of scientists who study human genetic engineering.

Professor Xu was born in Shanghai and grew up in Hong Kong. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and then lost to the University of Pittsburgh. He was awarded the doctorate of philosophy in 1979. Professor Xu joined the Genetics Department of Sick Children's Hospital after receiving short-term training in the Biology Department of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. 1989, Professor Xu successfully identified the defective gene (i.e. cystic fibrosis diaphragmatic regulatory gene -CFTR) that caused cystic fibrosis, which was an important breakthrough in human genetics. At present, Professor Xu still takes cystic fibrosis as his exploration direction, and at the same time devotes himself to gene research and gene analysis of other diseases.

Over the years, Professor Xu has won many awards and honors. Among them are distinguished scientists of the Canadian Medical Research Council, academicians of the Royal Society of Canada, the Royal Society of London, Academia Sinica and the World Innovation Foundation. Foreign Fellow, National Academy of Sciences. Professor Xu has not only won many international and domestic awards, but also received honorary doctorates from many famous universities, including King's College University, University of New Brunswick, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Saint Francis Xavier University and York University. In addition, Professor Xu was awarded the Canadian Medal, the Ontario Medal and the Killam Prize of the Canadian Parliament.

Introduction to the University of Hong Kong

course content

A school year consists of two semesters, and each semester has fifteen weeks of teaching time and three weeks of evaluation time.

Generally, each student has to take 60 credits in one academic year (that is, 30 credits in one semester).

80% of the elective subjects are within the scope of their professional subjects, and the remaining 20% are self-selected subjects such as Chinese and English law, computer knowledge, general education and interdisciplinary research.

Academic evaluation is generally conducted at the end of the semester.

Language instruction

Except for subjects in Chinese Department, Japanese courses in Japanese Studies Department, speech and hearing science courses and Chinese courses in College of Education, China law courses and Chinese medicine courses in Law Department, all courses in HKU are taught in English, and assignments and written tests are also in English.

Chinese department subjects are taught in Cantonese or Mandarin. Elective students must be fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin and understand Chinese writing.
