The school, formerly known as Fudan College, was founded in 1905. It is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning independently established by the people in China. 1952 after the adjustment of departments, the school has become a comprehensive university focusing on basic teaching and research of arts and sciences. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University, the fourth national medical college of Sun Yat-sen University founded by 1927, to form a new Fudan University.

Fudan University Cultural Tradition:

1, school emblem: the currently used school emblem applied for trademark registration on 1999, and successively issued certificates on 2000-200 1. The school emblem is circular, with Fudan's seal script in the center and English names around it, and the center is the lower ring when the school was founded (AD).

2, school motto: erudite and determined, thirsty for knowledge, diligent in thinking. The school motto comes from The Analects of Confucius, Zhang Zi.
