Historical evolution of St. John's University
St. John's University was founded on 1 September, 8791day, formerly known as St. John's College. It was formed by the merger of two original Anglican schools, Peiya College and Dunn College, by S.J. Yue Se, Bishop of the American Anglican Church, and was set up in Huang Fan Resort in the west of Shanghai. /kloc-ground was broken in April/April, and the first phase of enrollment was enrolled in September 1 year. Since 1892, the school has officially opened university courses and taught English as the most important subject. From 65438 to 0896, the school formed a teaching pattern of arts, sciences, medicine, theology and preparatory courses, which was the only institution of higher learning in Shanghai and had a far-reaching impact on the reform of higher education in Southeast China. 1905, the school became a regular university, registered in Washington state, USA. The university has four university colleges, namely, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Science, the Medical College and the Theological Seminary, as well as the affiliated preparatory schools, and has become a missionary school in China recognized by the US government. At this time, St. John had begun to take shape, with a church built with the support of 1884 from Ms. Clarkson, New York, USA, and later converted into the auditorium and main church of the school (the church was demolished in the late 1980s and converted into the library of East China University of Political Science and Law), and the Chinese teaching building "Shihuai Hall" built by 1894 and named after its founder (renamed as "Taofen Building" in the early 1990s) 19 13 St. John's University began to recruit graduate students, 1936 began to recruit female students. Later, it developed into a comprehensive missionary university with six departments (Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Medical College, Engineering College, Seminary and Agricultural College). The school was not registered with the national government until 1947.

At the beginning of its establishment

St John's University is one of the famous missionary universities in modern China. It was originally St. John's College. It was founded by American Bishop Shi in 1877 and officially opened in 1879. Initially, in order to attract students and expand their influence, the school provided free accommodation and other daily necessities without tuition and fees. 1888, Francis Lister Hawks Pott, an Anglican missionary, began to serve as the principal until he retired in 1942.

The school has initially set up two departments: Chinese Department and Theology Department, namely, Medical Department 1880 and English Department 188 1. In terms of teaching characteristics, the school pays special attention to English learning. English is a compulsory course for students, and most classes are taught in English. Because the English level of students in this university is the best in China, they are welcomed by employers.

1896 St. John's College was reorganized and expanded to form an undergraduate department composed of arts, science, medicine and theology. Since the 20th century, St. John's University has made great efforts in improving the quality of teaching and expanding the scale of running a school, and has successively established four relatively independent colleges: College of Arts, College of Science, Medical College and Theological College. After 1906, its graduates can also enter American universities for further study, thus attracting a large number of students. 1923 Newly-added Civil Engineering College. "June 3rd" patriotic feat

From 65438 to 0925, the May 30th tragedy broke out in Shanghai, and all walks of life took to the streets. Teachers and students of St. John's University and affiliated middle schools also organized strike protests, but they were stopped by the school. So on June 3rd, 553 students and 19 China teachers collectively swore to leave St. John's University, and more than 10 fresh graduates declared that they would not accept the diploma issued by St. John's University. This day was designated as the anniversary of Guanghua University. On June 4th, the teachers of the students who left school got together to discuss the establishment of their own schools. Their actions were supported by all walks of life and parents of students, and they paid a price for the land. Even General Zhang Xueliang said that "as long as you are patriotic and enthusiastic, I will do my best to help you" and is willing to donate huge sums of money to help Guanghua. With the assistance of all parties, a new "Guanghua University" was established in just three months, and merged with Daxia University in June 195 1 to form East China Normal University.

In the early days of liberation, in order to commemorate the "June 3rd" patriotic feat of 1925 school, some teachers and students renamed the Wei Feitang on campus as "June 3rd Floor". 1998 after the overhaul, it was changed into an administrative office building.

Before 1949, the Agricultural College of St. John's University closed classes, and some students transferred to the Agricultural College of Jinling University and Lingnan University. After liberation, the division of St. John's University is as follows: from 1949 to 1952, the journalism department, foreign languages department and Chinese department of St. John's University (partially) merged into Fudan University. 195 1 the departments of civil engineering and architectural engineering of St. John's University were merged into Tongji University. 1952 St. John's University department of mechanical engineering merged into Jiaotong University; The Department of Economics of St. John's University was merged into Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (now Shanghai University of Finance and Economics); The political department of St. John's University was merged into East China University of Political Science and Law (now East China University of Political Science and Law); The Faculty of Science (Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Biology), Department of Education and Department of Chinese (partially) of St. John's University were merged into East China Normal University; St. John's University School of Medicine participated in the establishment of Shanghai Second Medical College, which was later renamed Shanghai Second Medical University (now Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine); Cancel the seminary and transfer students to religious schools in Nanjing; The middle school affiliated to St. John's University and the second middle school affiliated to Datong University merged into Shanghai May 4th Middle School.
