A department in a university refers to a professional branch. According to the category of majors, an institution of higher learning can be divided into several departments, and one or several majors with similar nature can be set up below the department.

Generally, each department has a dean and several vice presidents who lead the professional teaching and research section, laboratory and relevant research room (institute) of the department, and are responsible for planning and organizing the teaching and research work of the department.

The undergraduate specialty of general education is formed on the basis of the Catalogue of Undergraduate Specialty of Ordinary Colleges and Universities (2020 Edition) promulgated by the Ministry of Education, supplemented by new majors approved in recent years.

As of August, 20021year, there are 12 disciplines (excluding military science, the same below), 92 majors and 740 majors in general education in China. 12 disciplines include science, engineering, medicine and agronomy; Humanities and social sciences include literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, education and art.
