The school was founded in 1952, and successively belonged to the former Ministry of Heavy Industry and the former Ministry of Metallurgical Industry. 1998 was placed under the leadership of Shandong province, and the management system of "co-construction by the central and local governments, with local management as the mainstay" was implemented. Shandong Institute of Metallurgy and Qingdao Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture were renamed Qingdao University of Technology in 2004.
