CMU was founded by industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1900, then it was called Carnegie Technical School, and changed its name to Carnegie Mellon University in 19 12, and began to transform into a research university. Andrew carnegie and Andrew Mellon, two founders of Carnegie Mellon University, are both important figures in modern American history.

Carnegie was one of the four American chaebols in the early 20th century, and its wealth ranked second in the whole human history, second only to the oil tycoon Rockefeller. Andrew Mellon, a famous American banker and the mother company of Mellon Financial Consortium, served as US Treasury Secretary from 192 1 to 1932, and has gone through three administrations. Mellon Consortium is one of the largest asset management companies in the world, and completed the merger with Bank of new york in 2007.
