The school was founded in 1952 and named Beijing Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It was formed by merging the aviation departments of Tsinghua University, Beiyang University, Xiamen University, Sichuan University and Chongqing University. 1959 was designated as a national key university by the state, and was renamed Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics on April 2, 1988.
