The main research area is not the chemical properties of materials (although it can be understood literally), but the chemical processes involved in the preparation and use of materials and the measurement of material properties.
For example, the changes of ceramic materials in the sintering process (that is, how to burn the desired ceramics), the corrosion phenomenon of metal materials in the use process (how to prevent rust), the influence of the control of conditions in the metallurgical process on products (how to make high-quality steel) and so on.
The measurement of material properties is also different from the method of material physics specialty. The research of material chemistry is mostly related to traditional industries and belongs to the theoretical discipline of solving practical problems. Therefore, the research topic of material chemistry is not so trendy and popular. However, in actual production, there is a huge demand for outstanding talents in material chemistry. For example, in metallurgical industry, problems such as low efficiency, poor product quality and serious waste in the process of smelting steel and nonferrous metals need to be solved with knowledge of material chemistry.
Although China has always been famous for its ceramics, in fact, most of the world's precision ceramics (used in electronic materials, which are very expensive) are made in Japan, because our technical strength in batching and controlling sintering conditions is too poor, and material chemistry is the solution to these problems. Therefore, material chemistry not only has high practical value, but also has great development space.
The basic courses of material chemistry mainly involve physics, thermodynamics, material chemistry, metallurgy and electrochemistry, especially inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry. Of course, due to different professional directions, some majors still need a lot of knowledge of organic chemistry and biochemistry, such as the application of membrane technology and colloid technology in reaction (film and colloid are used as reaction media in production) and so on.
Therefore, the requirements for candidates in this major are more comprehensive. Candidates who want to apply for this major, especially those who take the "3+X" exam, should be prepared. This major belongs to Neo-Confucianism, but it is different from pure Neo-Confucianism and has certain requirements for practical ability. Generally speaking, the competition of this major is not very fierce, and the difficulty is much smaller than that of the popular engineering major. Among domestic universities, Tsinghua University Department of Materials Science and Engineering is very strong in material chemistry, and the level of University of Science and Technology Beijing, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Harbin Institute of Technology and civil aviation university of china is also very high.
