The school covers an area of 920,000 square meters, with two campuses, Yanta and Lintong, a graduate school, 20 colleges and 60 undergraduate majors. There are 6 postdoctoral research stations, 7 first-class doctoral programs, 26 first-class master programs and 6 engineering master degree categories. There are nearly 2300 faculty members.

The predecessor of Xi 'an University of Science and Technology can be traced back to the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering of National Northwest Institute of Technology, which was founded in 1938. 1958 In July, Xi 'an Mining Institute was established. 1June 9, 1999, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Xi 'an Institute of Science and Technology. On April 6, 2003, it was renamed as Xi 'an University of Science and Technology with the approval of the Ministry of Education.

By 2022, Xi 'an University of Science and Technology will be ranked 179 in China University of Soft Science in 2022.
