The school now has 22 undergraduate majors, including civil engineering, industrial design, communication engineering, transportation, engineering mechanics, engineering management, business administration, financial management, architecture, automation, accounting, statistics, sociology, law, English, French, building environment and equipment engineering, mechanical design and manufacturing and automation, electronic information science and technology, computer science and technology, transportation equipment information engineering, international economy and trade. The school enrolls students nationwide, including graduate students, undergraduates, adult education and continuing education. The college has always attached great importance to discipline construction and is one of the first universities in China to award doctoral and master's degrees. At present, there are two first-class doctoral programs in civil engineering and transportation, three post-doctoral mobile stations-mathematics, civil engineering, transportation engineering, probability theory and mathematical statistics. 19 has the right to award doctoral degrees, 43 disciplines have the right to award master's degrees, 3 national key disciplines and 3 key disciplines in Hunan Province. At present, there are 44 in-service doctoral tutors and hundreds of master tutors, and more than 200 scientific research projects are carried out every year.

In mathematics, the research team led by mathematician Professor Hou Zhenting has achieved fruitful results in the study of Markov processes, winning the international "Dai Weixun" award twice and the third prize of the National Natural Science Award, and its "minimum nonnegative solution" is internationally known as "Hou's theorem";

Foreign languages: It has formed its own characteristics in the study of English language and literature, foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, and its achievements have won many national and provincial social science research awards. It is an important base for foreign language academic research exchange and personnel training between the Ministry of Railways and Hunan Province. He is the examiner of English major in Hunan Higher Self-taught Examination, and has four research institutions, including Foreign Language Center of Ministry of Railways and Institute of Foreign Language and Literature Translation. The master's degree program "English Language and Literature" was rated as a Class A master's degree program by the State Council Academic Degree Office, and "Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics" was the key construction discipline in the Tenth Five-Year Plan of Hunan Province.
Information technology: the research team headed by Dr. Li, a young professor, has been called "Li Method" by academicians of the American and Italian Academy of Sciences, and has undertaken major projects of the National Natural Science Foundation and won the second prize of the research category of Fok Ying Tung Foundation; In the aspect of computer control technology, it successfully solved the problems of online automatic detection of float glass and won the third prize of national technological invention. The national 863 plan project "Changsha Water Supply Company 863/CZMS Applied Normal Project" passed the national acceptance and won the award of the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2009, all the students majoring in Pepe in Chuangzhi New Town of Adult Education College of Central South University will move to the railway campus of Central South University to study. According to the plan, the school will form a large-scale advantage of software and information technology in the railway campus, and it is expected that the railway campus will become a software talent base.
Mechanical manufacturing: The first CNC spiral bevel gear milling machine in China has been successfully developed, which has become one of the six technological leaps of CNC machine tools in China in recent years.
The school has hired foreign experts since 1978, which is the first time that the Ministry of Railways and universities in Hunan Province have hired foreign experts to teach. Up to now, more than 340 foreign experts and scholars have come to our school to give lectures or give short-term lectures, and have established cooperative relations with many universities in the United States, France, Germany, Britain, Belgium, Australia and other countries. The school has obtained the right of 1999 international student enrollment, and has enrolled international students from the United States, South Korea, Mongolia and Thailand.
The school is the first university in Hunan Province to set up a board of directors with 80 directors, which is closely related to the horizontal society.
