The College of Biotechnology of Southwest University was formerly the sericulture department of Southwest Agricultural College. Its history can be traced back to the 1930s and 1940s. In 1930s and 1940s, Sichuan University, Yunnan University, the former Central Institute of Technology and other universities in southwest China set up sericulture departments or sericulture departments respectively.

From 65438 to 0992, the sericulture department and the silk engineering department merged into the sericulture and silk college of Southwest Agricultural University, with two majors of sericulture and silk engineering.

1992 sericulture laboratory was approved as the key laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture and the key laboratory of Chongqing;

1998 adjustment of the national professional catalogue, silk engineering was classified as textile engineering, and clothing specialty was added;

In 2002, Sichuan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College merged with Southwest Agricultural University to form a new Southwest Agricultural University. The sericulture and silk college of Southwest Agricultural University and the biotechnology department of Sichuan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College merged to form the sericulture and biotechnology college and the textile and garment college, with two brands and one team. During this period, the college has achieved fruitful results in the field of sericulture research, and this professional discipline has been approved as a national key discipline (special economic animal breeding);

In April 2005, the Institute of Sericulture and Biotechnology was established and operated independently.

In July 2005, Southwest Agricultural University and Southwest Normal University merged to form Southwest University.

In April, 2006, the College was established, and its disciplines and specialties were adjusted. The former College of Sericulture and Biotechnology of Southwest Agricultural University and the former College of Life Sciences of Southwest Normal University were merged to form the College of Life Sciences and the College of Sericulture and Biotechnology of Southwest University, with two brands and one team.

In April, 2007, the school adjusted the college again and established the College of Biotechnology of Southwest University.
