University of South China (hereinafter referred to as Nanhua), located in Hengyang City, Hunan Province, was founded in 1958. It is jointly established by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, State Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, China National Nuclear Corporation, China Nuclear Industry Construction Group Corporation and Hunan Provincial People's Government, covering philosophy, economics, law, literature, art, science, engineering, medicine and management.

In 2000, the Central South Institute of Technology, the Sixth Institute of Nuclear Industry and Hengyang Medical College, which were originally affiliated to the Ministry of Nuclear Industry, were merged. The school is the first batch of "excellent engineers" by the Ministry of Education, the first batch of "excellent doctoral education and training plan" by the Ministry of Health, the selection and training base for reserve officers of China People's Liberation Army (Navy) and the national innovation and entrepreneurship training base for college students.
